untitled-abstract-watercolour-sam-francis
Untitled (Abstract Watercolour) - Sam Francis

A delicate abstract watercolour by Sam Francis, featuring fluid washes of colour and an airy, open composition.

This work by Sam Francis displays the artist's characteristic approach to the medium of watercolour. Francis, a figure associated with the second generation of American Abstract Expressionists, spent significant time in Paris and Tokyo. These experiences informed his unique synthesis of Western gestural abstraction and Eastern spatial concepts.

The composition is defined by a generous use of negative space, a hallmark of his practice. Rather than filling the entire surface, Francis allows the white of the paper to function as an active element. The forms are suspended, appearing to float within the frame. The application of pigment is fluid and translucent, demonstrating his control over the dilution of colour.

Soft washes of pale blue, green, and yellow create a luminous atmosphere. These lighter tones are punctuated by more concentrated marks of red and gold. The paint application varies from controlled, soft-edged shapes to occasional drips that suggest the physical process of the medium. The lack of a central, fixed subject encourages the viewer to observe the interaction between the colours and the paper surface.

Francis often spoke of his interest in the quality of light and the physical properties of paint. This piece reflects that preoccupation, as the layering of thin washes creates a sense of depth without relying on traditional perspective. The work avoids rigid structure, favouring an open, airy arrangement that feels spontaneous yet carefully considered. It is an example of his ability to balance energy with restraint, maintaining a sense of clarity despite the non-representational nature of the forms. This print captures the delicate textures and subtle colour transitions of the original, preserving the ethereal quality of the artist's hand.

You might also like

Hero and Leander (To Christopher Marlowe) by Cy Twombly
New York III by Helen Frankenthaler
Sam Francis prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-Abstract-Watercolour-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125875796.jpg?v=1792209469
