According to the narrative, Augustine was walking along the beach, contemplating the mystery of the Holy Trinity, when he observed a child attempting to empty the ocean into a small hole in the sand with a shell. When the saint questioned the boy, the child replied that it was as impossible to empty the sea as it was for the human mind to comprehend the infinite nature of God.

Filippo Lippi presents this scene with the characteristic clarity of the Florentine Quattrocento. The saint, dressed in his episcopal robes, stands to the left, his posture one of gentle inquiry. The child, depicted with a halo, kneels by the water, gesturing towards the sea. The setting is a stylised, rocky terrain that recedes into the distance, typical of the period's approach to spatial construction. The palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones, with the gold of the halos providing a luminous contrast to the muted landscape.

Lippi, a Carmelite friar, was known for his ability to humanise religious subjects. His figures possess a tangible weight and presence, grounded in the naturalistic observation that defined the artistic output of mid-fifteenth-century Italy. The composition balances the verticality of the saint with the horizontal flow of the shoreline, creating a sense of quiet contemplation. This piece reflects the period's interest in combining theological narrative with a structured, observable world. The attention to the folds of the drapery and the specific rendering of the rocky outcrops demonstrates the technical precision expected of a master of the Florentine school. This print captures the narrative tension of the encounter, offering a window into the devotional art of the Italian Renaissance.

You might also like

Massacre of the Innocents by Fra Angelico
Baptism of the People by Andrea del Sarto
Filippo Lippi artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Vision-of-St_Poster_CompositorV1_1792122681019.jpg?v=1792211126
