He was standing on the first-class deck, looking down into the steerage section, where passengers were housed in the lowest, most affordable quarters of the ship. The composition is defined by the stark geometry of the ship's architecture, including the diagonal bridge, the vertical mast, and the repetitive lines of the railings. These structural elements divide the frame, creating a clear separation between the upper deck and the crowded lower level.\n\nStieglitz noted that he was struck by the shapes and the interplay of light and shadow rather than the social narrative of the scene. He observed the straw hat of a man, the funnel, and the movement of the people below, which he felt formed a picture of shapes related to each other. This approach marked a shift in his practice, moving away from the soft-focus aesthetic of Pictorialism towards a more direct, modernist style. The image is often cited for its formal rigour, as the arrangement of figures and industrial forms creates a balanced, almost abstract composition.\n\nThis photogravure reflects the technical precision Stieglitz sought in his work. The contrast between the bright, sunlit upper deck and the darker, more enclosed space of the steerage creates a sense of depth. The figures are captured in candid moments, with some looking towards the camera and others engaged in conversation or rest. By focusing on the formal qualities of the scene, Stieglitz produced an image that remains a study in composition and light, documenting a specific moment in the history of transatlantic travel.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Alfred Stieglitz","offers":[{"title":"Fine Art Poster \/ A4 (21x29.7 cm) \/
