Renoir captures the sisters in a domestic setting, engaged in a musical moment. Claudine sits at the piano, while Huguette stands to the left holding a violin, and the youngest, Helyonne, stands to the right, listening. The composition focuses on the interplay between the figures and their instruments, reflecting the bourgeois domesticity often explored by Impressionist painters of the period.

Renoir employs his characteristic soft brushwork to render the textures of the girls' white dresses and the polished wood of the piano. The light within the scene is diffused, creating a gentle atmosphere that avoids harsh shadows. The colour palette remains relatively restrained, allowing the focus to stay on the expressions and postures of the children. The inclusion of a vase of flowers atop the piano adds a touch of colour, balancing the composition. This painting is representative of Renoir's later period, where he moved away from the more experimental techniques of his early career toward a style that prioritised clarity of form and a smoother surface finish.

The work provides a glimpse into the social circles of the late nineteenth-century Parisian intelligentsia. By placing the children in a musical context, Renoir suggests the importance of artistic education within their household. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it remains a study of childhood and family life. The artist's ability to capture the fleeting nature of a musical rehearsal demonstrates his skill in portraiture, as he balances the individual personalities of the three sisters with the requirements of a formal group commission.

<p
