Executed in black and white chalk, the work utilises the blue-grey ground of the paper to establish mid-tones, allowing the artist to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the facial features. The lighting originates from the upper left, casting the right side of the face into soft shadow while illuminating the forehead, nose, and cheekbones with precise white highlights.

Van Troostwijk captures his own likeness with a direct, engaging gaze. His hair is rendered with loose, energetic strokes that contrast with the smoother, more controlled shading of the skin. The collar of his garment is suggested through minimal, fluid lines, drawing the viewer's attention back to the expression. The composition is tight, focusing entirely on the head and shoulders, which creates an intimate connection between the subject and the observer.

As a Dutch artist active during the early nineteenth century, Van Troostwijk is often associated with the transition between traditional Dutch landscape painting and a more personal, observational approach to portraiture. This drawing reflects the academic training of the period, yet it possesses a spontaneity that suggests a study from life. The use of blue paper was a common practice among draughtsmen of the era, providing a neutral base that harmonises the stark contrast between the black chalk and white highlights. This print reproduces the subtle textures of the original chalk work, preserving the tactile quality of the medium on the paper surface.

You might also like

Gezicht op het oude Rome - Franz Hanfstaengl — Franz Hanfstaengl
Miss Ann Elliott, Beaufort, South Carolina - Thomas Sully — Thomas Sully
