He worked in a variety of media, including painting, graphic design, and decorative arts. Moser helped found the Wiener Werkstätte, an association of artists and designers that aimed to reform the applied arts. His work often features stylised forms, bold colours, and a synthesis of different artistic disciplines. In this self-portrait, Moser depicts himself sketching a mermaid. The composition is divided into two distinct areas. On the left, a pale mermaid reclines in a dark grotto, surrounded by cool blues and greens. To the right, Moser sits in profile, clad in a light-coloured suit, his gaze fixed on the subject of his sketch. The palette is muted, with an emphasis on earthy tones and desaturated blues. The scene has a dreamlike quality, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.

You might also like

Self-Portrait (Nude) by Richard Gerstl
The Broken Column by Frida Kahlo
More by Koloman Moser →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Self-Portrait-with-Mermaid_Poster_CompositorV1_1779150608480.jpg?v=1779151125
