Wood presents himself with a direct, steady gaze, positioned before a balcony that overlooks a dense urban cityscape. The composition balances the figure of the artist with the architectural forms of the buildings behind him, creating a sense of spatial depth that remains grounded in the two-dimensional surface of the canvas.

Wood is depicted wearing a distinctive patterned jumper, which serves as a visual anchor for the composition. His attire and the presence of his painting equipment on the table nearby suggest a moment of professional reflection. The palette is composed of muted blues, greys, and earthy tones, which reflect the atmospheric quality of the city environment. His brushwork is controlled, favouring clear outlines and solid forms over painterly abstraction.

As a member of the Seven and Five Society, Wood was associated with the development of British Modernism. His work often synthesised influences from his travels across Europe, particularly the French post-impressionist tradition. This painting demonstrates his ability to combine personal observation with a structured approach to form. The inclusion of the painting box and brushes provides a glimpse into his working process, grounding the portrait in the reality of his daily life as a painter. The work remains a clear example of his technical approach during the late 1920s, showing his preference for clarity and a deliberate, measured application of paint. The urban backdrop, with its chimneys and rooftops, provides a context for his life in Paris, a city that occupied a central place in his artistic development.

You might also like

Self-Portrait by Thomas Barker
The Korin Brothers by Mikhail Nesterov

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Self-portrait_Poster_CompositorV1_1792114644751.jpg?v=1792135115
