Produced in 1886 for the Weimarer Radierverein, the work captures a moment of aristocratic life during the late nineteenth century. The composition features a group of riders on horseback, positioned in the foreground, while the architectural facade of the palace serves as a backdrop. A fountain with a sculptural element occupies the space between the riders and the building, adding a sense of depth to the scene.

Ahrends employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of the period's printmaking traditions. The fine lines define the textures of the horses, the riders' uniforms, and the stone architecture of the Belvedere. The artist balances the figures in the foreground with the structural elements of the palace, creating a clear sense of spatial arrangement. The inclusion of a small dog running near the fountain introduces a sense of movement and informality to the otherwise composed scene. The etching reflects the interest of the Weimarer Radierverein in documenting local landmarks and social customs through the medium of print. The work is presented on a warm-toned paper, which complements the delicate ink lines and provides a soft contrast to the detailed rendering of the figures and the environment. This piece offers a glimpse into the cultural atmosphere of Weimar, documenting the intersection of public space and private recreation in a period of German history marked by a steady appreciation for classical architecture and equestrian pursuits.

You might also like

Marché des Capucins - Léopold Flameng — Léopold Flameng
Au Rocher Bernard - Auguste Louis Lepère — Auguste-Louis Lepère

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Ruiters-voor-het-Belvedere-te-Weimar_Poster_CompositorV1_1791869347410.jpg?v=1791869671
