portret-van-filips-ii-koning-van-spanje-gebroeders-diederichs
Portret van Filips II, koning van Spanje - Gebroeders Diederichs

A nineteenth-century wood engraving depicting Philip II of Spain, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of historical book illustrations.

This wood engraving depicts Philip II of Spain, a monarch whose reign spanned the mid-sixteenth century. The portrait captures the king in profile, wearing a structured doublet and a hat adorned with feathers. The style reflects the nineteenth-century interest in historical figures, often produced by publishing houses such as Gebroeders Diederichs to accompany biographical texts or historical chronicles. The print employs a systematic approach to shading, using parallel lines and cross-hatching to define the contours of the face, the texture of the beard, and the fabric of the royal attire.

Technically, the work demonstrates the precision typical of mid-nineteenth-century wood engraving. The artist focuses on the regal bearing of the subject, ensuring that the facial features remain the primary subject of the composition. The inclusion of the name 'FILIPS II' at the base of the frame confirms its function as an illustrative plate, likely intended for an educational or historical publication. The stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface creates a clear, legible image that retains the graphic quality of the woodblock medium. This piece offers a glimpse into how historical figures were visualised and disseminated during the Victorian era, providing a stylised interpretation of the Spanish monarch rather than a direct copy of a contemporary Renaissance painting. The composition is balanced, with the subject positioned centrally to command attention, while the surrounding border provides a clean finish suitable for inclusion in a bound volume or as a standalone print.

You might also like

Portrait of Philip IV by Cesare Ferreri
Portret van Willem II, koning der Nederlanden by M.
