The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century clerical portraiture, placing the subject within an oval frame supported by architectural elements. Sartorius is shown in a traditional black cassock with a white clerical collar, holding a book, which signifies his scholarly and religious duties.

The surrounding frame is decorated with laurel wreaths, symbolising honour and victory, while the upper section features cherubs and a Hebrew inscription. Below the portrait, a large cartouche contains Latin and German text, providing biographical details and a eulogistic tribute to the subject. The use of hatching and cross-hatching techniques creates depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the subject's hair and the folds of his garment.

Christian Romstet was a prolific engraver based in Leipzig, known for his contributions to book illustrations and portrait prints during the late seventeenth century. His work often involved collaborations with local scholars and theologians, producing prints that functioned as both commemorative records and visual aids for printed sermons or biographies. This piece demonstrates the technical precision required for copperplate engraving, where every line contributes to the tonal balance of the image. The architectural framing provides a sense of formality, typical of the period's approach to memorialising public figures. The print remains a clear example of the intersection between religious life and the printmaking industry in Baroque Germany, where the dissemination of such portraits helped to establish the public identity of local church leaders.

You might also like

Portret van Gottfried Wegner by Christian Daniel Pietesch
Portret van Johann Ferber by Johann Pfann

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Nicolaus-Sartorius_Poster_CompositorV1_1791872567191.jpg?v=1791872913
