Executed by Jan Luyken, a prolific engraver and poet, the work demonstrates the mastery of line and shadow characteristic of seventeenth-century printmaking. The subject is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for formal portraiture of the period, which directs the viewer's attention to the sitter's expression and posture.

Van Giffen is depicted in clerical attire, including a dark robe and a white collar, which contrasts with the lighter tones of his face and hands. His right hand is positioned in a gesture of address, suggesting his role as a preacher. Behind him, a heavy curtain is drawn back to reveal a glimpse of a church tower, likely the Grote Kerk in Dordrecht. This inclusion provides a specific geographical and professional context for the sitter, linking his identity to the ecclesiastical life of the city.

The engraving technique employs varied line weights to create volume and texture. The drapery of the curtain and the folds of the robe are rendered with cross-hatching, which adds depth to the composition. The background architecture is handled with finer, more delicate lines to suggest distance. Below the portrait, the plate includes a Latin and Dutch inscription, a standard feature for commemorative prints of this era, which identifies the subject and provides a brief laudatory text regarding his character and ministry.

Luyken's work is notable for its clarity and balance. The composition avoids unnecessary clutter, focusing instead on the dignity of the subject. This print provides a clear view into the visual culture of the Netherlands during the late seventeenth century, where portraiture served as a means to document the lives of prominent citizens and religious figures.
