The portrait is presented within a formal oval frame, a common convention for seventeenth-century book illustrations and scholarly frontispieces. The subject is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing the long, curled wig characteristic of the period and a lace-trimmed cravat. The precision of the line work, particularly in the rendering of the hair and the texture of the clothing, reflects the technical skill required for copperplate engraving during the Dutch Golden Age.

Below the oval portrait, a cartouche contains a Latin inscription by Sebastien Fesch. This inclusion of text serves to identify the subject and provide a scholarly context for the print. The Latin verses offer a formal tribute to Patin, aligning with the intellectual culture of the time where medical and scientific figures were frequently commemorated through such refined graphic works. The composition is balanced and restrained, focusing on the likeness of the sitter while maintaining the decorative qualities expected of high-quality printmaking from this era.

Pieter Mortier (I) was a prominent publisher and engraver based in Amsterdam. His work often involved the reproduction of maps and portraits, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge across Europe. This specific print demonstrates the clarity and attention to detail that defined his output. The use of hatching and cross-hatching techniques creates a sense of volume and depth within the limited space of the oval frame. As a museum-grade fine art print, this piece offers a glimpse into the visual language of seventeenth-century portraiture, where the sitter's status is communicated through both his attire and the formal presentation of his image in a classical, academic style.

You might also like

Portrait of Edouard Molé by Robert Nanteuil
Doctor in de geneeskunde by David Loggan

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Charles-Patin_Poster_CompositorV1_1791940047709.jpg?v=1791948623
