portrait-of-bernardus-somer-jan-de-bisschop
Portrait of Bernardus Somer - Jan de Bisschop

A refined seventeenth-century portrait by Jan de Bisschop, executed in pen and brown wash, capturing the subject with subtle tonal modelling.

This portrait by Jan de Bisschop captures the subject, identified as Bernardus Somer, in a classic seventeenth-century Dutch style. De Bisschop, a lawyer by profession and an artist by avocation, was known for his technical proficiency in drawing and printmaking. He often utilised brown ink and wash to create tonal depth, a technique clearly visible in the modelling of the sitter's face and the folds of his cloak.

The composition is contained within an oval format, a common choice for portraiture of the period. The sitter is depicted in a three-quarter view, wearing a plain white collar, which provides a stark contrast to the darker, fluid washes used for his garments. The artist employs light and shadow to define the facial features, conveying a sense of presence and character without unnecessary embellishment. The handling of the wash demonstrates a controlled application, allowing the paper to act as a highlight, particularly on the collar and the bridge of the nose.

Jan de Bisschop was an influential figure in the Dutch art scene, particularly through his publications that disseminated classical models to other artists. His own drawings often reflect a balance between observation and the stylistic conventions of his time. This work is a representative example of his portraiture, showing his ability to capture individual likeness through a disciplined use of ink and wash. The portrait remains a study in the restrained elegance characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age, where the focus remains on the sitter's expression and the subtle interplay of light across the form.

You might also like

Buste van een man by Moses ter Borch
Portret van de boekhandelaar David Blok by Jan Weissenbruch
More by Jan de Bisschop →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Bernardus-Somer_Poster_CompositorV1_1785541089047.jpg?v=1785541302
