This drawing, titled Paard en een koe bij een boom, demonstrates his precise observation of livestock. The composition features a horse and a cow positioned near a tree, with a fence visible in the background. Potter uses graphite to define the muscular forms of the animals, while subtle grey washes provide depth and shadow to their hides. The artist captures the quiet stillness of the scene, a characteristic feature of his work.

Potter was known for his ability to render the anatomy of cattle and horses with accuracy, often placing them in open fields under expansive skies. His approach to drawing is methodical, focusing on the texture of the animals and the way light interacts with their bodies. The inclusion of the tree provides a vertical element that balances the horizontal arrangement of the animals. In the distance, a faint suggestion of a village or farmstead is visible, grounding the subjects in a recognisable Dutch rural setting. The artist's signature is present in the lower right corner, confirming the work as an authentic example of his draughtsmanship.

This piece offers a glimpse into the daily life of the seventeenth-century Dutch countryside. It reflects the period's interest in pastoral themes and the scientific observation of nature. The work is devoid of unnecessary embellishment, allowing the viewer to focus on the anatomical study and the interplay of light and shadow. As a fine art print, this drawing retains the delicate quality of the original graphite lines and the soft tonal transitions of the wash. It is a study of form and composition, showing Potter's skill in creating a sense of space and volume on a two-dimensional surface.

You might also like

Veestuk (Cattle Piece) by Abraham van Calraet
Cattle by a Stream by George Stubbs
More by Paulus Potter →
