The work, titled Ochtentoilet, captures a quiet moment within a modest interior. A woman sits on a wooden chair, attending to a small child who stands upon a low stool. To the right, a second figure observes the interaction. The composition relies on the conventions of Dutch genre painting, focusing on the mundane activities of daily life rather than grand historical narratives.

Chalon employs a delicate etching technique to define the textures of the room. The cross-hatching creates depth within the shadows of the hearth and the folds of the figures' clothing. The scene is sparse, containing only essential items such as a basket, a pitcher, and simple furniture. This lack of clutter directs the viewer's attention to the human connection between the figures. The artist demonstrates a clear understanding of light and shadow, using the etching needle to suggest the warmth of a domestic space.

As a female artist working in the Netherlands during this period, Chalon followed in the footsteps of earlier masters who favoured intimate, small-scale subjects. Her work reflects the interest in everyday life that remained popular among collectors of prints. The etching is executed with precision, showing a mastery of line that defines the forms without unnecessary ornamentation. This print offers a glimpse into the social and domestic habits of the time, presented with a straightforward, observational approach. The figures are rendered with a sense of naturalism, capturing the posture and gestures of the subjects in a manner that feels authentic to the setting. The print is a representative example of the genre etching tradition, maintaining a balance between technical skill and narrative simplicity.

You might also like

Groep figuren (Group of Figures) by Cornelis van Noorde
Tafelgezelschap - Jurriaan Andriessen by Jurriaen Andriessen

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Ochtentoilet_Poster_CompositorV1_1781333171429.jpg?v=1781569032
