This period marked a shift in his approach to colour and form, influenced by the light and atmosphere of North Africa. The composition avoids traditional perspective, favouring flat planes of colour that define the space through chromatic contrast rather than depth.

The work features a bold, terracotta-coloured tree trunk that bisects the frame, contrasting with the cool, turquoise foliage and the soft pink sky. Matisse uses simplified shapes to represent the garden, reducing natural elements to their essential forms. The application of paint is direct, with visible brushwork that maintains the energy of the initial observation. Small, star-shaped flowers are scattered across the lower section, providing a rhythmic detail against the larger, sweeping curves of the vegetation.

Matisse sought to capture the sensation of the garden rather than a literal transcription of the scene. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he allows the relationship between the colours to dictate the mood of the piece. The palette is deliberate, balancing the warmth of the earth tones with the cooling effect of the blues and greens. This work reflects the artist's ongoing exploration of decorative qualities within a modern framework, a pursuit that occupied much of his career. The lack of shadows and the emphasis on surface pattern demonstrate his departure from academic conventions, aligning with his broader goals of creating art that functions as a mental rest for the viewer. The print captures the texture of the original paint application, preserving the immediacy of the artist's hand.

You might also like

Yacht by André Derain
Flags by Raoul Dufy

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Moroccan-Garden_Poster_CompositorV1_1791927214766.jpg?v=1791940913
