marchant-arabe-guillaume-rouille
Marchant Arabe - Guillaume Rouille

A sixteenth-century engraving from the Promptuarii Iconum Insigniorum, depicting an Arab merchant in traditional attire.

This engraving, titled Marchant Arabe, originates from the sixteenth-century publication Promptuarii Iconum Insigniorum, produced by the French printer and publisher Guillaume Rouille. The work belongs to a genre of costume books and portrait collections that gained popularity during the Renaissance, aiming to document the appearance and dress of various cultures and historical figures for a European audience.

The figure is depicted in a standing position, wearing a striped outer garment and a turban. The artist employs a clean, linear style characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century printmaking. The focus is on the clarity of the costume, with the vertical stripes of the robe providing a sense of structure and rhythm to the composition. The subject holds a small object in his hands, suggesting a professional or mercantile context. The script above the figure, reading Marchant Arabe, identifies the subject within the broader taxonomic project of the book.

Technically, the print relies on precise hatching to define the folds of the fabric and the texture of the turban. The background remains minimal, keeping the viewer's attention on the figure and his attire. Such prints were often used as reference material for scholars, artists, and curious readers of the period. This specific impression retains the original plate mark and the surrounding margins of the book page, offering a glimpse into the production standards of sixteenth-century Lyon. The work provides a record of how European observers interpreted and categorised non-European dress during the early modern period, reflecting the era's interest in global documentation and the dissemination of knowledge through the medium of the printed book.

You might also like

Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints Peter and John the Baptist - Girolamo Mocetto — Girolamo Mocetto
Mercury Telling the Story of Pan and Syrinx - Giulio Bonasone — Giulio Bonasone

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Marchant-Arabe_Poster_CompositorV1_1791860678530.jpg?v=1791861321
