This specific work captures her in the guise of Tragedy, a role that allowed the artist to explore dramatic emotional expression through a classical lens. The composition is framed within a circular format, which focuses the viewer entirely on the subject's expressive features and her slightly parted lips.

Romney employs a painterly technique here, favouring loose, fluid brushwork over the rigid precision often associated with formal portraiture of the period. The lighting is theatrical, casting shadows across the face to heighten the sense of melancholy and theatricality. Her auburn hair is rendered with quick, gestural strokes, contrasting with the smoother application of paint on the skin tones. The palette is restrained, relying on deep browns and warm ochres to create a sense of depth and focus.

This study reflects the artist's interest in the 'attitudes' performed by Lady Hamilton, which were popularised in European society during the late eighteenth century. These performances involved the adoption of poses inspired by classical sculpture and historical narratives. By isolating the head and shoulders, Romney strips away extraneous detail, allowing the psychological state of the sitter to dominate the frame. The work provides insight into the collaborative relationship between the artist and his subject, as well as the broader cultural fascination with classical drama and emotive portraiture during the Georgian era. The painting remains a clear example of Romney's ability to balance technical skill with a keen sense of characterisation, capturing a fleeting moment of dramatic intensity.

<div
