This work displays a flattened, dreamlike narrative space, typical of his mid-career output. A mounted figure in a pointed hat sits atop a brown horse, while a pale, spectral horse occupies the foreground alongside a winding snake. The composition is contained within an organic, ochre-toned shape that floats against a deep red background, suggesting a celestial or otherworldly setting.

Brauner frequently drew upon esoteric traditions, folklore, and personal mythology. The figures here possess a schematic, almost primitive quality, eschewing realistic anatomical proportions in favour of symbolic clarity. The stark contrast between the warm, earthy tones of the central motif and the intense red of the surrounding field creates a sense of psychological tension. The snake, a recurring motif in Brauner's work, often represents transformation or hidden knowledge. By removing the scene from a conventional temporal or spatial context, the artist invites the viewer to engage with the image as a fragment of a private, internal logic rather than a literal depiction of a historical event.

This piece reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of the subconscious and the visual arts. His approach to painting during this period often involved a deliberate simplification of form, allowing the symbolic weight of the subjects to take precedence over technical naturalism. The resulting image functions as a visual riddle, where the relationship between the rider, the horses, and the serpent remains intentionally ambiguous. It is a characteristic example of how Brauner utilised painting to map the terrain of his own imagination, creating works that operate outside the boundaries of rational interpretation.

You might also like

The Sonata of the Moon by Sabin Balasa
The Seniors by Sabin Bălașa

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Knight-White-Horse-and-Snake_Poster_CompositorV1_1792116350462.jpg?v=1792138035
