This etching, titled Il Segretario dei Contadini in Roma, captures a specific social function within the city. A scribe sits at a simple table, providing a service for those who lacked the ability to read or write. He is surrounded by three men, likely peasants, who observe his work with focused attention. The scene is set against a backdrop of classical architectural columns, a common motif in Pinelli's work that grounds his subjects within the historical fabric of Rome.

Pinelli employed a precise, linear style characteristic of his etchings. His work often prioritises clarity and narrative over atmospheric depth. The figures are rendered with distinct outlines, and the cross-hatching provides texture to their clothing and the surrounding stonework. The inclusion of written documents on the table, complete with small illustrations, adds a layer of realism to the composition. These details suggest the scribe is drafting letters or perhaps recording official requests for his clients. The interaction between the figures is natural, reflecting the artist's keen observation of the social dynamics of his time. This print offers a glimpse into the informal systems of communication that existed in Rome before the widespread adoption of literacy. It is a piece of social history, preserved through the medium of printmaking, that avoids romanticising the hardships of the era while maintaining a clear, descriptive quality.

You might also like

Tomb of the Three Curatii Brothers in Albano - Giovanni Battista Piranesi — Giovanni Battista Piranesi
The Route near a Precipice - Ferdinand Kobell — Ferdinand Kobell

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Il-Segretario-dei-Contadini-in-Roma_Poster_CompositorV1_1786366854917.jpg?v=1786843733
