{"product_id":"harmony-wa-maki-haku","title":"Harmony (Wa) - Maki Haku","description":"\u003cp\u003eA striking woodblock print by Maki Haku featuring the Japanese character for harmony, rendered in bold black ink against a textured, embossed cement background.\u003c\/p\u003e\n \u003cp\u003eMaki Haku, born Maejima Tadaaki, occupies a distinct position within the twentieth-century Japanese print movement. His work bridges the gap between traditional shodo calligraphy and modern abstract art. This piece, titled Harmony (Wa), features the Japanese character for harmony, rendered with bold, gestural strokes that prioritise form over literal legibility. The character is presented in deep black, providing a stark contrast to the textured, off-white background.\n\nTechnically, Maki Haku is recognised for his innovative use of cement embossing. By applying cement to the woodblock, he created a relief surface that imparts a tactile, sculptural quality to the paper. This process results in a surface that catches light and shadow, adding physical depth to the two-dimensional print. The inclusion of a single, circular orange element introduces a point of colour that balances the composition, drawing the eye across the negative space.\n\nHis approach reflects a synthesis of ancient aesthetic principles and contemporary abstraction. The artist often focused on single kanji characters, stripping them of their conventional linguistic function to explore their inherent graphic potential. The red seal in the lower corner provides a traditional anchor, linking the work to the long history of Japanese printmaking while maintaining a modern sensibility. The paper itself, with its visible fibres and organic texture, complements the raw, elemental nature of the embossed cement. This print is an example of the artist's ability to reduce complex concepts to their most essential visual components, creating a sense of balance through minimal means.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv
