The composition reflects the principles of Rayonism, a movement she co-founded with Mikhail Larionov. Rayonism sought to depict the crossing of rays of light reflected from objects, rather than the objects themselves. In this painting, the forest is reduced to a series of intersecting, angular strokes of green, blue, and white paint.

The visual structure relies on the dynamic tension between these linear elements. By breaking down the subject into directional force lines, Goncharova moves away from traditional representation. The brushwork is energetic and deliberate, creating a sense of rhythm that suggests the density of a woodland environment without relying on literal depiction. The palette is restricted to cool tones, which reinforces the atmospheric quality of the scene.

This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the synthesis of Western European modernism and traditional Russian folk art aesthetics. The flattened space and emphasis on the surface of the canvas are characteristic of her approach during the early 1910s. By prioritising the mechanics of perception, Goncharova invites the viewer to engage with the painting as a collection of energetic vectors. The absence of a clear horizon or central subject forces the eye to traverse the entire surface, capturing the kinetic energy of light as it filters through the foliage. This piece remains a clear example of the radical shift in visual language that defined the early twentieth-century avant-garde in Russia.

<div
