In this 1975 work, Girl Friends, she presents two figures engaged in a quiet, enigmatic interaction. The composition is marked by Fini's characteristic interest in masquerade and the blurring of human and animal traits. One figure, wearing what appears to be a tail, touches the face of her companion, whose features are partially obscured by an abacus-like frame. This device acts as a barrier, suggesting a complex, perhaps playful, psychological distance between the two subjects.

Fini frequently utilised feline imagery throughout her career, reflecting her personal fascination with cats. Here, the subtle inclusion of horns and tails on the figures suggests a mythological or carnivalesque atmosphere. The application of paint is textured and layered, with a palette dominated by warm, earthy tones contrasted against cooler blues. The brushwork remains visible, contributing to the dreamlike quality of the scene. Unlike many of her contemporaries who focused on the subconscious through rigid symbolism, Fini preferred a more theatrical approach to her subjects. She often placed her figures in ambiguous settings that resist simple narrative interpretation. This piece captures the artist's ability to create a sense of intimacy that feels simultaneously domestic and otherworldly. The interaction between the two women, mediated by the abacus, invites the viewer to consider the nature of their connection and the artifice inherent in their presentation. Fini's work remains a distinct contribution to twentieth-century figurative art, prioritising personal mythology over the orthodoxies of the Surrealist group.

You might also like

Portrait of a Young Woman by Edgar Degas
Vase (Self-Portrait) by Léon Bakst
More by Leonor Fini →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Girl-Friends_Poster_CompositorV1_1792118869129.jpg?v=1792143203
