This composition demonstrates his capacity for rendering diverse textures, from the smooth skin of stone fruits to the porous surface of a stoneware jug. The arrangement follows the conventions of seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish still life, where an abundance of produce is displayed across a table surface against a dark, neutral background.

The painting features a variety of objects, including porcelain plates filled with red currants, a central bowl of assorted fruits, and a decorative tazza holding a small bouquet of flowers. Van Kessel includes small creatures, such as a squirrel and insects, which add a sense of life to the static scene. These details reflect the period interest in scientific observation and the classification of the natural world. The lighting is directed to define the volume of each object, creating a sense of physical presence on the table.

Van Kessel often worked on a smaller scale, but this work displays the characteristic precision he applied to his subjects. The inclusion of a silver spoon, a knife, and a folded napkin provides a domestic context, suggesting a setting of luxury and consumption. The artist balances the composition through the placement of the large stoneware jar on the right and the smaller glassware on the left. The colour palette remains grounded in earth tones, with the red of the currants and the varied hues of the fruit providing the primary visual interest. This work is representative of the artist's technical skill and his focus on the material qualities of his subjects, capturing a moment of quiet observation within a highly structured environment.

You might also like

Still Life: A Basket of Grapes and Other Fruit by Jacob van Hulsdonck
Still Life—Strawberries, Nuts, &c. by Raphaelle Peale

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Fruit-still-life-with-flower-tazza-squirrel-and-jar_Poster_CompositorV1_1792123534049.jpg?v=1792296815
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/fr/products/fruit-still-life-with-flower-tazza-squirrel-and-jar-jan-van-kessel-the-elder
