elsens-bij-brussels-hans-collaert-the-elder
Elsens bij Brussels - Hans Collaert the Elder

A detailed sixteenth-century etching by Hans Collaert the Elder, capturing the village of Elsene near Brussels with figures and rural architecture.

This etching and engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicts the village of Elsene, situated near Brussels, during the sixteenth century. The composition follows the conventions of Northern Renaissance topographical prints, which often combined accurate geographical observation with genre elements to provide a sense of daily life. In the foreground, a shepherd tends to a small flock of sheep, while figures traverse the path leading toward the village centre. The middle ground features a series of modest dwellings and trees, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of the period.

Collaert employs a system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the foliage, the stone walls, and the rolling terrain. The sky is treated with horizontal lines, suggesting a clear, calm atmosphere. The inclusion of human activity, such as the figures on horseback and the family walking along the road, adds a narrative quality to the scene. This work reflects the interest of the era in documenting the rural surroundings of major urban centres in the Low Countries. The print captures a specific moment in the development of the region, providing a visual record of the architecture and rural customs of the time. The balanced composition draws the eye from the immediate foreground, where the shepherd stands, across the open fields to the village buildings in the distance. This print is a representative example of the technical skill found in Flemish printmaking during the mid-sixteenth century, demonstrating a clear command of perspective and detail within a relatively small format.

<p style="font-size:0.85rem;color:#888;font-weight:600;margin:0 0
