The composition centres on the body of Christ, seated and supported by figures in a rocky, outdoor setting. To the left, the crown of thorns rests on the ground, serving as a reminder of the preceding events of the Passion. The figures surrounding the central subject display expressions of grief, their forms rendered with the characteristic linear style of sixteenth-century German woodblock printing.

Geißler employs a clear, graphic approach to the scene. The lines are firm and descriptive, defining the musculature of Christ and the heavy folds of the garments worn by the mourners. The background includes a gnarled tree and architectural elements, which provide a sense of space despite the overall flatness of the medium. The work reflects the technical conventions of the period, where the woodcut served as a primary means for disseminating religious imagery to a wider audience. The artist uses hatching and cross-hatching to suggest volume and shadow, creating a sense of depth within the restricted tonal range of black ink on paper. This print is a representative example of the devotional art produced in the German-speaking lands during the mid-to-late sixteenth century, focusing on the emotional weight of the narrative through a disciplined, graphic technique.

You might also like

Bewening van Christus by Hans Baldung Grien
The Corpse of Christ by Ferdinand Piloty

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Bewening_Poster_CompositorV1_1791948896905.jpg?v=1791949621
