air-and-water-johann-kellerthaler-the-younger
Air and Water - Johann Kellerthaler the Younger

A detailed Mannerist engraving by Johann Kellerthaler the Younger, depicting an allegory of the elements through classical figures and sea creatures.

This engraving by Johann Kellerthaler the Younger, titled Air and Water, belongs to the tradition of allegorical printmaking prevalent in late sixteenth-century Germany. The composition is contained within a circular frame, a common format for decorative prints of the period. The scene depicts a central female figure accompanied by several putti, all positioned atop sea creatures. The Latin inscription, AER ET AQVA, identifies the subject as an allegory of the elements.

The artist employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of the period's print culture. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and fluid, serpentine poses typical of Northern Mannerism. The background features a coastal scene with architectural elements and ships, providing a sense of spatial depth that contrasts with the foreground figures. The water is rendered through rhythmic, swirling lines that suggest movement and turbulence.

Kellerthaler, a goldsmith and engraver based in Dresden, brought a high level of technical control to this work. The shading is achieved through varied hatching patterns, which define the musculature of the putti and the soft contours of the central figure. The inclusion of a figure pouring water from a vessel serves as a clear visual signifier for the element of water, while the presence of the winged putto above suggests the element of air. This print functions as a study of classical iconography adapted for a contemporary audience. It reflects the interest in natural philosophy and the classification of the physical world that occupied scholars and artists during the Renaissance. The work is a fine example of the technical skill required for copperplate engraving, where every mark must be carefully planned to achieve the desired tonal range and clarity of form.

<p style="font-size:0.85rem;color:#888;font-weight:600;margin:0 0
