Morikage, a student of the Kano school, eventually moved away from the rigid conventions of his training to develop a more personal, atmospheric style. This work features towering, jagged rock formations that emerge from a sea of mist, a common motif in East Asian ink painting that suggests the vastness of nature.

The composition relies on the contrast between the solid, detailed foreground and the ethereal, distant peaks. A small boat sails on the calm water, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the expansive environment. The artist uses varying densities of ink to create depth, with the foreground rocks rendered in darker, more defined strokes, while the distant mountains fade into the pale background. The inclusion of small structures perched upon the cliffs adds a narrative element, hinting at the presence of recluses or travellers in this remote setting.

Morikage is known for his ability to capture a sense of quietude. His brushwork is deliberate and controlled, reflecting the influence of Chinese literati painting traditions that were gaining traction in Japan at the time. The silk support allows for subtle gradations of tone, which the artist exploits to create the soft, hazy atmosphere surrounding the cliffs. This piece is a representative example of the artist's later work, where he prioritised mood and spatial suggestion over the decorative formality often associated with the Kano school. The work remains a study in balance, using negative space to define the boundaries of the scene.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Rainstorm over a River Village - Tanomura Chikuden — Tanomura Chikuden

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Landscape-Hanging-Scroll-_Poster_CompositorV1_1789557989321.jpg?v=1789558508
view-of-west-lake-kusumi-morikage
View of West Lake - Kusumi Morikage

A six-panel folding screen by Kusumi Morikage, depicting the serene West Lake through delicate ink-wash techniques and atmospheric composition.

This six-panel folding screen depicts the celebrated West Lake, a subject with deep roots in East Asian poetic and artistic traditions. Kusumi Morikage, a student of the Kano school who later developed an independent style, employs a restrained ink-wash technique to capture the atmospheric conditions of the site. The composition relies on the interplay between solid forms and empty space, a hallmark of the period's aesthetic preference for suggestion over explicit detail.

The scene features architectural elements, including pavilions and arched bridges, nestled among weeping willows and craggy hills. Small boats traverse the water, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the expansive environment. The artist uses varying densities of ink to create depth, with distant mountains rendered in soft, blurred washes that recede into the background, while the foreground structures are defined by more precise, controlled brushwork.

Morikage is known for his departure from the rigid formality of the Kano school, favouring a more personal and lyrical approach to his subjects. This work demonstrates his ability to balance technical precision with a sense of quiet observation. The screen format allows the viewer to engage with the scene as a continuous narrative, moving from the detailed foreground to the ethereal, mist-covered horizon. The use of monochrome ink focuses the viewer's attention on the structure of the composition and the subtle tonal shifts, rather than colour. It is a fine example of seventeenth-century Japanese ink painting, reflecting the period's interest in classical Chinese themes interpreted through a distinctively Japanese sensibility.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Landscapes in Various Styles after Old Masters - Mei Qing — Mei Qing

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/View-of-West-Lake_Poster_CompositorV1_1789675355186.jpg?v=1789695854
