The composition captures the moment of transformation, as Daphne begins to turn into a laurel tree to escape the advances of the god Apollo. Her arms are raised, with leaves sprouting from her fingertips, while her lower body begins to merge with the earth. Apollo, shown in pursuit, reaches out with a gesture of surprise and longing. To the left, a river god reclines by the water, observing the scene with a sense of calm authority. The work is based on a painting by Luca Giordano, reflecting the 18th-century practice of translating Baroque compositions into the precise medium of printmaking.

Levasseur demonstrates technical mastery through his use of varied line weights and cross-hatching. These techniques create a sense of volume in the figures and depth in the surrounding environment. The play of light across the skin of the figures contrasts with the darker, textured foliage and rocky terrain. The inclusion of a formal dedication at the base, along with a coat of arms, identifies this as a print intended for a sophisticated audience, likely part of a collection of fine art reproductions popular in the Enlightenment era. The scene balances the dramatic narrative of Ovid's Metamorphoses with the structured, orderly aesthetic characteristic of the period. The print serves as a record of the original painting, preserving the composition for study and appreciation by contemporary collectors.

You might also like

Old Woman Holding a Tulip - Luigi Valperga — Luigi Valperga
Leonora - Francesco Bartolozzi — Francesco Bartolozzi

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Apollo-and-Daphne_Poster_CompositorV1_1782267969976.jpg?v=1782268637
les-soldats-en-repos-jean-charles-levasseur
Les Soldats en Repos - Jean Charles Levasseur

A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Jean Charles Levasseur, depicting soldiers resting in a rugged, natural setting.

This fine etching, titled Les Soldats en Repos, demonstrates the technical precision of Jean Charles Levasseur, a French engraver active during the late eighteenth century. The composition depicts a quiet moment in a rugged, rocky terrain, where two figures pause beneath the gnarled branches of a large, weathered tree. The scene balances human activity with the surrounding natural environment, a common theme in the graphic arts of the period.

Levasseur employs a variety of line weights to define the textures within the print. The rough, pitted surface of the rocks and the twisted bark of the central tree are rendered with dense, cross-hatched lines, creating a sense of weight and age. In contrast, the figures are delineated with more fluid strokes, allowing them to emerge from the shadows of the foreground. The background opens into a distant, atmospheric vista, providing depth to the scene through the use of lighter, more delicate engraving techniques.

As an engraver, Levasseur was known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of paintings into the monochromatic medium of print. This work captures the stillness of the soldiers, who appear detached from the rigours of military life. The interplay of light and shadow, characteristic of the period, directs the viewer's eye toward the central interaction between the standing and seated figures. The print serves as an example of the high level of craftsmanship expected of professional engravers in eighteenth-century France, who were responsible for disseminating artistic compositions to a wider audience. The work remains a fine example of the period's interest in pastoral and genre subjects, rendered with a disciplined approach to line and form.

<div from Voltaire's Oedipe - Jean Charles Levasseur

A detailed 18th-century engraving by Jean Charles Levasseur depicting a dramatic scene from Voltaire's play, Oedipe, set within a classical architectural interior.

This etching and engraving by Jean Charles Levasseur depicts a dramatic moment from Voltaire's play, Oedipe. The scene captures the tension between the protagonist and the figures surrounding him, set within a grand, classical architectural space. The composition is structured to draw the eye toward the central interaction, where a bearded figure gestures with authority toward the king. The background features a coffered ceiling and a relief of a sphinx, which provides a clear nod to the Theban setting of the narrative.

Levasseur, a skilled printmaker of the eighteenth century, demonstrates technical precision in his handling of light and shadow. The figures are rendered with careful attention to their classical drapery and expressive postures, reflecting the theatrical nature of the source material. The text at the bottom, 'Tremblez malheureux Roi votre règne est passé', adds a layer of narrative urgency to the visual composition, directly referencing the dialogue of the play. This work is typical of the period's interest in classical literature and the dissemination of theatrical scenes through high-quality print media.

The architectural elements, including the heavy columns and the vaulted ceiling, provide a sense of scale and permanence. The figures are arranged in a manner that suggests a stage production, with the characters positioned to maximise the emotional impact of the scene. The fine lines of the engraving allow for a high level of detail in the costumes and the facial expressions of the participants. This print serves as a record of the aesthetic preferences of the era, where the intersection of literature and visual art was a common pursuit for collectors and enthusiasts of the Enlightenment period.

You might also like

Neo-classical Vases in a Landscape - Jean Charles Delafosse — Jean Charles Delafosse
Een man met hoed op de rug gezien - Joannes Bemme — Johannes Adriaansz. The composition captures a scene of high emotional tension, set within a classical architectural space defined by fluted columns and a vaulted ceiling. At the centre, a female figure stands before an altar, surrounded by billowing smoke that suggests a sacrificial or ritualistic context. The figures are dressed in classical drapery, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the late eighteenth century.

Levasseur, a skilled engraver, employs precise line work to define the textures of the stone, the soft folds of the garments, and the ethereal quality of the smoke. The figures on the right, including a man in military attire, gesture towards the central character, conveying the narrative urgency typical of theatrical illustrations from this period. The text inscribed at the base, 'Appren... que je t'adore... & que je m'en punis', provides the specific dialogue from the play, grounding the visual work in its literary source.

This print demonstrates the technical proficiency of French printmaking during the Neoclassical era. The artist balances the rigid geometry of the interior architecture with the fluid, expressive postures of the characters. Such works were often produced to accompany published editions of plays, allowing readers to visualise the staging and emotional intensity of the performance. The use of light and shadow, achieved through varied hatching techniques, creates a sense of depth and focus on the central action. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of literature, theatre, and visual art in eighteenth-century France, where classical themes were frequently revisited to explore human passion and moral conflict.

You might also like

Neo-classical Vases in a Landscape - Jean Charles Delafosse — Jean Charles Delafosse
Een man met hoed op de rug gezien - Joannes Bemme — Johannes Adriaansz.
