The composition is structured around a central cloth banner bearing the Latin title, suspended from a mulberry tree. This central element is framed by four oval vignettes, each depicting a different stage of the silkworm's development, from larva to adult moth. The surrounding architectural framework incorporates strapwork and grotesque masks, typical of the late sixteenth-century Flemish style.

The print reflects the period's fascination with natural history and the systematic observation of the insect world. Van Mallery, a skilled engraver associated with the workshop of Philips Galle, demonstrates precision in his line work, particularly in the rendering of the silkworm's textures and the foliage of the mulberry tree. The inclusion of the dedication at the base, referencing the Florentine nobility, indicates the print's function as a formal introduction to a scientific or didactic publication.

Visually, the work balances the rigid, geometric nature of the architectural border with the organic forms of the insects and leaves. The engraving technique allows for a high degree of detail, capturing the delicate wings of the moths and the segmented bodies of the larvae. This piece is a representative example of how scientific inquiry was presented through the medium of print during the late Renaissance, combining artistic ornamentation with empirical observation. The work provides a clear window into the intersection of art, biology, and printing technology in the Low Countries at the turn of the seventeenth century.

You might also like

Vlinder by Pieter Lyonet
Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, Plate XX by Maria Sibylla Merian

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Title-Page-for-Vermis-Sericus_Poster_CompositorV1_1791868956895-q80.jpg?v=1792521900
