Poussin, a central figure of the French Baroque, often turned to Ovid's Metamorphoses for his subject matter. The composition is organised with a clear, rational structure, typical of his approach to narrative art. A group of figures surrounds the central tree, their gestures conveying the drama of the miraculous birth. The artist employs a delicate use of wash to define form and shadow, creating a sense of volume within the figures while maintaining a light, airy quality across the scene.

The background features a distant architectural silhouette, providing a sense of scale and setting the mythological event within a recognisable, if idealised, world. Poussin's mastery of line is evident in the fluid contours of the drapery and the expressive poses of the attendants. The work demonstrates his interest in classical themes and his ability to translate complex literary narratives into visual form. By focusing on the moment of emergence, the drawing captures a transition between states of being, a common preoccupation in his oeuvre. The monochromatic palette allows the viewer to focus on the arrangement of the figures and the clarity of the composition, free from the distraction of colour. This study reflects the artist's disciplined method, where preparatory sketches were used to refine the spatial relationships and emotional tone of a final painting. The work is a fine example of seventeenth-century draughtsmanship, showing the balance between observation and classical idealism that defined Poussin's career in Rome.

<div
