This wood engraving, titled Bacchante or The Player on The Lyre, reflects the group's shared interest in pastoral themes and classical mythology. The work depicts a solitary female figure, seen from behind, standing in a wooded setting while playing a lyre. Her posture is tilted, suggesting a state of musical absorption or ecstasy.

The composition is defined by the contrast between the figure and the surrounding foliage. Calvert uses dense, rhythmic lines to build form and shadow, a technique that aligns with the wood engraving traditions of the early nineteenth century. The trees and ground are rendered with a high degree of texture, creating a sense of depth that contrasts with the smooth, simplified contours of the figure.

Calvert's work often explored themes of innocence and the idealised past. This print is no exception, as it presents a vision of a world removed from the industrialisation of the era. The small scale of the print is typical of his output, which was intended for intimate viewing rather than public display. The figure's drapery and the inclusion of the lyre serve as clear references to classical antiquity, a common subject for artists working within the Romantic tradition. The print demonstrates Calvert's technical skill in managing the limitations of the wood block, using varied line weights to suggest light and atmosphere within a monochromatic medium. It remains a representative example of the small-scale, highly personal graphic work produced by the Ancients during their most active period.

You might also like

The Christian Triumph by William Blake
The Apparition to Dionysius of Syracuse by Johann Heinrich Füssli

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Bacchante-or-The-Player-on-The-Lyre_Poster_CompositorV1_1791871349718-q80.jpg?v=1792530748
