The scene depicts a narrative moment from the Makhzan al-Asrar, or Treasury of Mysteries, where an elderly woman confronts Sultan Sanjar to seek justice against the oppression of his officials.

The composition is characteristic of the Tabriz school during the Safavid period. It employs a high horizon line, allowing for a detailed arrangement of figures across the golden, undulating terrain. Sultan Sanjar is depicted on horseback, surrounded by his retinue, while the old woman stands before him in a gesture of petition. The artist balances the royal procession with the natural world, incorporating rocky outcrops, flowering shrubs, and a sky filled with delicate cloud formations.

Sultan Muhammad is recognised for his ability to integrate human drama with a decorative, almost jewel-like aesthetic. The figures are rendered with precise brushwork, and their garments display a variety of patterns and colours. The use of gold leaf throughout the ground and sky provides a sense of luminosity, common in high-quality courtly manuscripts of the sixteenth century. The work is framed by an illuminated border, which reflects the meticulous craftsmanship involved in the production of royal books. This print captures the fine detail of the original manuscript page, preserving the narrative clarity and the stylistic conventions of Persian court painting. The balance between the organic forms of the tree and the geometric precision of the figure creates a harmonious visual experience.

You might also like

The Wedding Night of Anushirvan and the Khaqan's Daughter by Unknown Persian Artist
Layla Visiting Majnun in the Desert by Persian School
Sultan Muhammad prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Youth-Reading-Under-a-Flowering-Tree_Poster_CompositorV1_1789647090493.jpg?v=1789647310
zahhak-chained-on-mount-damavand-sultan-muhammad
Zahhak Chained on Mount Damavand - Sultan Muhammad

A detailed Persian miniature by Sultan Muhammad depicting the capture of the tyrant Zahhak on Mount Damavand.

This exquisite miniature painting depicts a scene from the Shahnameh, the Persian epic poem by Ferdowsi. It illustrates the moment the tyrant king Zahhak is captured and chained within a cave on Mount Damavand. Sultan Muhammad, a master of the Safavid court, employs a high-angle perspective to organise the complex narrative across the rocky terrain. The composition is divided into distinct zones: the upper section shows the cave where Zahhak is bound, while the lower slopes are populated by soldiers, horses, and attendants navigating the craggy mountain path.

The artist uses a refined palette of mineral pigments, including lapis lazuli for the sky and gold leaf for the decorative borders and rock highlights. The figures are rendered with precise brushwork, characteristic of the Tabriz school of painting. Each character wears detailed period attire, and the horses are depicted with individualised markings. The rocky outcrops are stylised, featuring swirling, organic forms that create a sense of verticality and movement. Calligraphic text is integrated into the composition, providing context for the narrative action. The work demonstrates the technical mastery of the Safavid period, where the balance between decorative elements and narrative clarity is maintained through careful spatial arrangement. It depicts the legendary hero Rustam sleeping in a wild, mountainous setting while his faithful horse, Rakhsh, defends him against a lion. The composition is characteristic of the Tabriz school, where the artist employs a high viewpoint to organise a complex array of natural elements.

The scene is filled with dense foliage, craggy rock formations, and flowering trees, all rendered with precision. Sultan Muhammad is known for his imaginative approach to nature, often incorporating fantastical colours into the rocks and vegetation. The palette includes muted earth tones alongside saturated blues and greens, balanced by the gold leaf applied to the sky and decorative borders. The integration of text blocks within the image area is a standard feature of the manuscript tradition, allowing the narrative to flow alongside the visual representation.

Rustam is shown resting on a striped rug, his posture relaxed, contrasting with the dynamic action occurring below him. The lion, depicted in a moment of aggression, is met by the defensive stance of Rakhsh. The artist uses fine brushwork to define the textures of the animal coats and the individual leaves of the trees. This work demonstrates the technical mastery of the Safavid period, where the focus remains on decorative unity and narrative clarity. The absence of traditional Western perspective is replaced by a vertical arrangement that allows the viewer to observe multiple planes of action simultaneously. This print captures the detail of the original manuscript page, preserving the balance between the calligraphic text and the painted scene.

You might also like

Royal Horse Inspection by 'Aliquli Jabbadar
The Wedding Night of Anushirvan and the Khaqan's Daughter by Unknown Persian Artist
Sultan Muhammad prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Sleeping-Rustam_Poster_CompositorV1_1789647542662.jpg?v=1789648223
