Vincent van Gogh utilised this high-contrast colour scheme to separate the subject from the surrounding space, a technique he often employed to focus attention on the sitter. The subject wears a dark cap with a distinct blue band, which provides a cool counterpoint to the warmth of the backdrop.

Van Gogh applied paint with his characteristic energy. The brushwork is visible, directional, and deliberate, defining the contours of the face and the structure of the clothing. His use of green in the shadows of the face and the collar of the jacket demonstrates his interest in colour theory, specifically the interaction between complementary hues. The green jacket sits against the yellow ground, while the red accents near the neck provide further chromatic tension.

This work belongs to a period where the artist moved away from the darker palettes of his earlier years in the Netherlands. In Arles, he sought to capture the intensity of the southern French light. The composition is direct and frontal, stripping away extraneous detail to present the individual with immediacy. The eyes are rendered with particular care, reflecting the artist's focus on the psychological presence of his subjects. This print reproduces the texture of the original oil paint, allowing for an examination of the artist's manual process. It is a study in the application of colour to convey form and mood without relying on traditional chiaroscuro or academic modelling techniques. The work remains a clear example of his mature style, where the physical act of painting is as much a part of the subject as the person depicted.

You might also like

Portrait of William Molard by Paul Gauguin
Lux in tenebris lucet by Ion Theodorescu-Sion
Vincent van Gogh prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Young-Man-with-a-Hat_Poster_CompositorV1_1791962719284.jpg?v=1791963051
