The composition displays the artist's shift away from the naturalistic representation favoured by his contemporaries, moving instead toward a more subjective, synthetic approach. The scene is dominated by the stark, cold white of the snow, which acts as a canvas for the muted tones of the village architecture and the dark, skeletal forms of the trees in the foreground.

Gauguin employs a flattened perspective, where the rolling hills and the small structures are arranged to create a decorative, almost graphic quality. The dark, triangular shape in the foreground provides a strong contrast to the lighter, icy hues of the surrounding environment. This figure, shrouded in shadow, introduces a sense of isolation often found in the artist's work from this period. The brushwork is deliberate, with visible strokes that build the texture of the snow and the rough surfaces of the buildings.

Unlike his earlier Impressionist experiments, this painting prioritises the emotional weight of the scene over precise atmospheric detail. The sky, rendered in pale yellows and soft blues, suggests the fading light of a winter afternoon. The inclusion of a small horse and rider in the middle distance adds a human element to the otherwise quiet, frozen environment. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's internal state during a transitional period of his career, balancing his European roots with the stylistic innovations he developed in the South Pacific. The work remains a study in colour relationships and the simplification of form, demonstrating how Gauguin used the physical world to express personal experience.

You might also like

Snow Field, Morning, Roxbury by John La Farge
Winter Scene with Tower and Figures by Johannes van Reijn
Paul Gauguin prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Village-in-the-Snow_Poster_CompositorV1_1791919257960.jpg?v=1791919339
