vestingplattegrond-van-edam-caspar-merian
Vestingplattegrond van Edam - Caspar Merian

A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Caspar Merian, documenting the fortified town plan of Edam with a numbered legend and heraldic crest.

This etching provides a clear, top-down view of the fortified town of Edam in the Netherlands. Produced by Caspar Merian, a skilled engraver and son of the famous publisher Matthäus Merian, the work reflects the period's interest in documenting urban development and military architecture. The map focuses on the town's defensive perimeter, including the moats and ramparts that defined its boundaries during the seventeenth century.

The composition is strictly functional. It uses a bird's-eye perspective to delineate the street layout, canal network, and key civic structures. A numbered legend on the left side identifies significant locations, such as the Grosse Kirche, the Rathhaus, and the harbour. These labels provide a direct link between the visual representation and the administrative reality of the town. In the upper right corner, the town's coat of arms, featuring a bull, adds a heraldic element to the otherwise utilitarian design.

Technically, the print demonstrates the precision characteristic of seventeenth-century Dutch and German cartographic engraving. The lines are clean and deliberate, prioritising legibility over decorative flourish. The scale bar at the bottom, marked in 'Ruhter', allows the viewer to gauge the dimensions of the town as it existed at the time of publication. This print is a valuable record for those interested in the history of urban planning and the evolution of Dutch maritime towns. It captures a moment when the town's infrastructure was carefully managed for trade and security. The absence of shading or atmospheric effects ensures that the focus remains entirely on the geometric arrangement of the town's core features, making it a precise historical document.

You might also like

Kaart van de Watergraafsmeer (bovenste deel) by Pieter van den Berge
Map of Antwerp - Martinus van den Enden (I) by Martinus van den Enden the Elder

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Vestingplattegrond-van-Edam_Poster_CompositorV1_1791948898085.jpg?v=1791949590
