While he is known for his systematic approach to art, his later gouache works introduced a more gestural, fluid quality. The composition consists of overlapping, undulating lines that traverse the surface in a rhythmic, non-linear fashion. These forms create a sense of motion against a bright blue background.

LeWitt utilised a limited palette of primary and secondary colours, including red, yellow, black, white, and grey. The application of paint is direct, showing the physical movement of the artist's hand. By focusing on the repetition of these serpentine shapes, the work explores the relationship between order and chaos. The lines do not follow a strict grid, yet they maintain a consistent density across the paper. This approach allows the viewer to observe the interaction of colour and form without the distraction of representational imagery.

As a practitioner of Conceptual Art, LeWitt often prioritised the idea behind the work over the final execution. However, these later gouache pieces demonstrate a shift toward a more tactile engagement with materials. The work functions as an investigation into the possibilities of the line as a primary element of visual language. It avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flat, decorative surface that engages the eye through its constant movement. The result is a balanced arrangement that feels both spontaneous and controlled, reflecting the artist's interest in the fundamental components of visual expression.

You might also like

Arabesque (Cubist Composition) by Albert Gleizes
Silver Series X by Joan Witek
More by Sol LeWitt →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Untitled-Scribble-Composition-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119474180.jpg?v=1792196348
