During this time, Pollock engaged with the ideas of Carl Jung, exploring the concept of the collective unconscious and the power of mythic imagery. The canvas features a grey ground, which acts as a neutral field for the application of dark, rhythmic forms.

These shapes suggest totemic figures or abstracted biological entities. Pollock uses a combination of thick, deliberate brushwork and more fluid, calligraphic lines to construct these forms. The composition avoids a central focus, instead distributing visual weight across the surface in a manner that anticipates his later, more expansive drip paintings. The palette is restrained, relying on blacks, browns, and muted tones to maintain a sense of gravity and focus.

Unlike his later works, which often obscure the hand of the artist through dense webs of paint, Totem Lesson 2 retains a clear connection to the act of drawing. Each mark remains visible, allowing the viewer to trace the movement of the brush across the surface. The work reflects an interest in the primitive and the archetypal, themes that occupied many artists in New York during the 1940s. By stripping away narrative detail, Pollock invites the viewer to engage with the raw energy of the paint itself. This piece offers a view into the transition between his earlier figurative experiments and the radical abstraction that would define his later career.

You might also like

Quarzeat by Cy Twombly
Cool White by Lee Krasner

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Totem-Lesson-2_Poster_CompositorV1_1792120907502.jpg?v=1792202052
