The composition focuses on the narrative of the saint as an infant, where a swarm of bees is said to have settled on his face, interpreted as a sign of his future eloquence. Lippi arranges the figures within a domestic interior, a common practice in Quattrocento painting to bring biblical or hagiographic events into a contemporary setting. The spatial arrangement uses a tiled floor to establish perspective, leading the eye toward the central bed where the infant rests.

Lippi employs a palette of muted earth tones, soft reds, and ochres, typical of his tempera technique. The figures are rendered with a focus on volume and soft modelling, reflecting the influence of Masaccio, yet Lippi introduces a distinct grace in the drapery and facial expressions. The grouping of the women around the bed creates a sense of quiet observation, while the architectural elements in the background provide a structured frame for the event. The light source appears to emanate from the upper left, casting gentle shadows that define the forms of the figures and the furniture.

As a practitioner of the Early Renaissance, Lippi balances the emerging interest in humanism and naturalism with traditional religious iconography. This piece demonstrates his ability to manage complex multi-figure compositions while maintaining a clear narrative focus. The attention to the textures of the garments and the domestic details, such as the bed coverings and the tiled floor, provides a glimpse into the aesthetic priorities of the period. This print captures the atmospheric quality of the original panel, preserving the delicate balance of colour and form that defines Lippi's contribution to the Florentine tradition.

You might also like

The Story of St. Nicholas: The Liberation of Three Innocents by Fra Angelico
Adoration of the Child by Paolo Uccello

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Dream-of-St_Poster_CompositorV1_1791932338219.jpg?v=1791944117
