The Rooks Have Arrived. - Aleksey Savrasov

A seminal work of Russian Realism, this painting captures the quiet, atmospheric transition from winter to spring in a rural village setting.

Aleksey Savrasov painted this work in 1871, capturing the transition from winter to spring in the Russian countryside. The composition focuses on a cluster of birch trees in the foreground, where rooks have begun to build their nests. This detail serves as a sign of the changing season, despite the presence of melting snow and slush on the ground.

In the background, a small village church with a bell tower stands against a sky filled with heavy, grey clouds. The palette is restrained, relying on muted tones of brown, grey, and white to convey the damp, chilly atmosphere of early spring. Savrasov avoids idealisation, choosing instead to depict the raw, unpolished reality of the rural environment. The wet earth and the receding snow reveal the textures of the thawing ground, while the bare branches of the trees create a sense of fragility.

This painting is associated with the Peredvizhniki movement, a group of Russian artists who sought to bring art to the public by depicting everyday life and the natural world with honesty. Savrasov was a teacher at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, and his approach to nature influenced a generation of painters. By focusing on a modest, quiet scene, he directs attention to the subtle shifts in the environment. The work remains a primary example of his ability to find beauty in the ordinary aspects of the Russian climate, eschewing grand subjects for the sake of atmospheric truth.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
The Rooks Have Come Back - Aleksey Savrasov — Alexei Savrasov

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Spring.-The-Rooks-Have-Arrived_Poster_CompositorV1_1790843937217.jpg?v=1790844297
