Executed in watercolour, the work displays a fluid, spontaneous approach to the medium that would become a hallmark of his later career. The composition is direct, focusing on the artist's gaze, which is rendered with a sense of youthful introspection.

Dufy employs a warm, earthy palette, dominated by ochre, sienna, and burnt orange tones. These colours create a soft, atmospheric quality around the figure. The application of paint is loose and gestural, particularly in the treatment of the hair and the background drapery. A striking contrast is provided by the deep, dark blue of the cravat, which anchors the composition and draws the eye to the centre of the portrait. The artist's brushwork is confident, allowing the white of the paper to remain visible in areas, which provides a sense of light and breathability to the image.

At this stage in his development, Dufy was still influenced by the Impressionist tradition, yet the work hints at his future interest in the expressive potential of colour. The lack of rigid outlines and the emphasis on tonal washes demonstrate his early mastery of watercolour techniques. This piece is a study of character and light, capturing a moment of quiet observation. It remains a significant example of his early portraiture, showing the technical foundations upon which his later, more decorative style was built. The work is signed and dated in the lower left corner, confirming its place as a documented early effort from his time in Le Havre and Paris.

You might also like

Self-portrait by Franz Marc
Self-Portrait by Thomas Hart Benton

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Self-Portrait_Poster_CompositorV1_1792117909596.jpg?v=1792141380
