Van der Waay, a Dutch painter and draughtsman known for his depictions of Amsterdam life, employs a reportage style that documents the social atmosphere of the late nineteenth-century sporting event. The composition is divided between the active race on the ice and the spectators lining the track, providing a clear view of the period attire and the public interest in organised winter sports.

In the upper left corner, a circular portrait of an older man, labelled 'Een Oud Professor', adds a layer of narrative curiosity to the scene. The central focus is the skater completing 'The last round', his posture conveying the physical exertion required for the race. The background features the modest architecture of the period, grounding the event in the specific geography of Amsterdam. Van der Waay uses fine, precise lines to delineate the figures and the textures of the ice, demonstrating his technical proficiency in lithographic printing. The text below the image serves as an official announcement for the event, integrating the graphic design elements common to promotional materials of the era. This work functions as a historical record of urban leisure, reflecting the growth of competitive sports clubs in the Netherlands during the late 1800s. The monochromatic palette emphasises the clarity of the drawing, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the athletes and the crowd. By documenting this specific Sunday in March, the artist preserves a moment of communal activity that defined the social calendar of the city.

You might also like

Zittend lezend meisje (Girl Reading) - Anthony Cornelis Cramer — Anthony Cornelis Cramer
The Death of Leonardo da Vinci - Lemercier & Cie. — Lemercier & Cie.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Schaatswedstrijd-op-de-ijsbaan-van-de-Amsterdamsche-Sportclub_Poster_CompositorV1_1790865325128.jpg?v=1790865835
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/de/products/schaatswedstrijd-op-de-ijsbaan-van-de-amsterdamsche-sportclub-nicolaas-van-der-waay
