saint-bartholomew-simone-martini
Saint Bartholomew - Simone Martini

A refined tempera panel by Simone Martini, depicting Saint Bartholomew against a traditional gold-leaf ground.

This panel painting by Simone Martini depicts Saint Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles. The work is characteristic of the Sienese School, which prioritised decorative elegance and refined line work over the more sculptural, volumetric approach favoured by contemporary Florentine painters. Martini, a master of the Trecento period, employs a delicate touch to render the saint's features, balancing naturalism with the stylised conventions of early fourteenth-century religious art.

The figure is set against a ground of tooled gold leaf, a technique that reflects the divine nature of the subject. The saint holds a knife, the traditional attribute associated with his martyrdom, alongside a closed book. His garments are rendered with subtle transitions in tone, showing the influence of Gothic grace in the fall of the drapery. The inscription, identifying the figure as 'S BARTOLOMEO', is integrated into the composition, maintaining the balance of the panel. The halo is incised with fine detail, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship expected in Sienese devotional objects of this era.

Martini was a central figure in the development of the International Gothic style, and his ability to combine narrative clarity with ornamental beauty is evident here. The work likely formed part of a larger polyptych, intended for a church or private chapel. The preservation of the gold leaf and the tempera pigments allows for a clear view of the artist's technical precision. This print captures the luminosity of the original surface, providing a window into the aesthetic priorities of the medieval Italian tradition.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Saint-Bartholomew_Poster_CompositorV1_1791879289420.jpg?v=1791879341
