The work depicts a mountainous terrain, characterised by soft, atmospheric washes and controlled brushwork. The artist employs varying ink tones to suggest distance, with the foreground elements rendered in darker, more defined strokes, while the distant peaks fade into a lighter, mist-like wash. This technique creates a sense of depth without relying on Western linear perspective.

The scene features small architectural structures, including a pavilion and modest dwellings, which provide a sense of scale against the imposing rock formations. The trees are depicted with calligraphic precision, showing the artist's focus on capturing the essence of the natural forms rather than a literal representation. The composition is balanced, guiding the eye across the horizontal expanse of the silk. The use of negative space, or 'void', is a deliberate choice, allowing the viewer to perceive the atmosphere and the suggested movement of water within the valleys.

Liu Yu demonstrates a mastery of ink control, where the saturation of the brush determines the texture of the stone and the density of the foliage. The work avoids excessive detail, favouring a harmonious arrangement that reflects the philosophical traditions associated with mountain retreats. The muted palette, restricted to shades of grey and sepia, emphasises the quietude of the scene. This print captures the subtle gradations of the original ink, preserving the delicate balance between the solid forms of the mountains and the ethereal quality of the surrounding mist. It is a representation of a secluded environment, intended to evoke a sense of calm and contemplation through its restrained visual language.

You might also like

Women Enjoying the River at the Forest’s Edge - Hunhar II — Hunhar II
Cascade - Wang Wei — Wang Wei

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Remote-Valleys-Sounds-of-Waterfalls-Deep-Forests_Poster_CompositorV1_1790812921305.jpg?v=1790815360
