This collection of prints served as a manual for artists and students, providing models for composition and technique. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the synthesis of text and image was a common practice in printed books.

The print displays a scene of a pavilion situated near water, surrounded by bamboo and trees. Two figures stand upon a small bridge, while a third individual carries a tray towards the structure. The composition uses a clear, linear style typical of woodblock printing from this era. The artist employs varied line weights to define the architecture, the foliage, and the ripples of the water. The accompanying text, written in elegant calligraphy, provides a poetic context for the visual scene. The presence of red seals indicates the importance of provenance and ownership in the tradition of Japanese book arts.

This print is an example of the technical precision achieved by woodblock carvers during the 17th century. The balance between the pictorial space and the calligraphic elements creates a harmonious page layout. The work is not merely decorative, but functions as an instructional tool for those learning the principles of ink wash painting. The monochromatic palette relies on the contrast between the dark ink and the paper, allowing the viewer to focus on the form and the brushwork. This print offers a glimpse into the educational materials that shaped the artistic practices of the time, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship involved in the production of Japanese illustrated books.

You might also like

The Surface of the Water (Mizu no omo shū) by Komatsubara Suikei
Evening Shower at the Bank of Tadasu River by Utagawa Hiroshige
Solis Prints prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Primer-on-Eight-Varieties-of-Painting-Hasshu-gafu-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791762203169-q80.jpg?v=1792846225
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/de/products/primer-on-eight-varieties-of-painting-hasshu-gafu-fine-art-print
