Executed in oil on a copper support, the work benefits from the smooth surface of the metal, which allows for fine detail and a luminous quality in the skin tones and the texture of the linen cap. The subject is presented in a bust-length format, set against a dark, neutral background that directs attention to her facial features and expression.

Lundens was active in Amsterdam and is known for his genre scenes and portraits. His approach here is direct and unadorned. The woman wears a white cap and a wide, stiffened collar, typical of the modest attire worn by middle-class Dutch women during the mid-seventeenth century. The lighting is focused, creating a soft contrast between the illuminated face and the shadowed background. This technique provides a sense of volume and presence to the sitter.

The circular format of the painting suggests it may have been intended for a private collection or as a personal memento. The brushwork is controlled, reflecting the artist's ability to balance realism with a restrained aesthetic. The subject's gaze is calm, offering a quiet observation of the viewer. This piece provides a clear example of the portraiture traditions prevalent in the Netherlands during this period, where the focus remained on the individual's character and social standing through subtle details of dress and posture. The preservation of the paint on the copper panel has ensured that the subtle gradations of light and shadow remain visible, allowing for an appreciation of the artist's technical skill in handling oil media on non-traditional surfaces.

You might also like

Portrait of Charles I of England - Anthony van Dyck — Anthony van Dyck
Apotheosis of Hercules - Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo — Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portret-van-een-vijftigjarige-vrouw_Poster_CompositorV1_1790858123394.jpg?v=1790858984
