Jacques-Louis David, the leading figure of the Neoclassical movement, captures his subject with a directness that avoids the excessive ornamentation common in earlier Rococo portraiture. The composition is restrained, focusing on the sitter's presence rather than elaborate surroundings.

De Joubert is shown seated, his posture relaxed yet formal. He wears a dark, tailored coat with white ruffles at the cuffs and neck, typical of the period's professional attire. His powdered wig is styled in a modest fashion, consistent with his status. One hand rests upon a red-covered table, where a few books are visible, suggesting his intellectual interests or administrative duties. The background is a neutral, muted tone, which ensures the viewer's attention remains on the subject's face and hands.

David employs a controlled palette, relying on the contrast between the dark clothing and the warm, reddish tones of the table covering. The lighting is soft, modelling the features of the face with precision. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to convey character through subtle gestures and a balanced arrangement of forms. It is a representative example of the portraiture style that defined the late eighteenth-century French elite, prioritising clarity and psychological observation over decorative artifice. The painting remains a clear record of the social and professional identity of its subject during the final years of the Ancien Régime.

You might also like

Portrait of Alexander Semenovitsch Chvostov by Vladimir Borovikovsky
Portret van Louis Viardot by Pierre-Paul Prud'hon
More by Jacques-Louis David →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Philippe-Laurent-de-Joubert_Poster_CompositorV1_1790192345531.jpg?v=1790193098
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/de/products/portrait-of-philippe-laurent-de-joubert-jacques-louis-david
