Mackay, a prominent figure in the mining industry, is depicted with the formal composure expected of a man of his status during the late nineteenth century. Cabanel employs a restrained palette, focusing on the textures of the sitter's dark coat and the subtle light reflecting off his features.

The composition is traditional, placing the subject in a seated position against a dark, nondescript background. This choice directs the viewer's attention entirely to the sitter's face and hands. Cabanel demonstrates his technical proficiency through the precise rendering of the subject's moustache, the crisp white collar, and the gloves held loosely in his lap. The brushwork is smooth and controlled, a hallmark of the Academic style that prioritised clarity and finish over the visible, gestural marks favoured by contemporary Impressionists.

John William Mackay is shown with a direct, steady gaze. His posture is relaxed yet authoritative, reflecting the confidence of a self-made man who achieved significant wealth through the Comstock Lode. The painting avoids unnecessary ornamentation, relying instead on the interplay of light and shadow to define the form of the sitter. This work represents the high level of portraiture commissioned by the elite of the era, where the artist sought to capture both the physical likeness and the social standing of the individual. Cabanel's ability to balance realism with a polished, idealised finish made him a preferred choice for such commissions throughout his career.

<div
