The text preserves a poem about cherry blossoms attributed to the poet Kodai no Kimi, a prominent figure of the mid-Heian period. The calligraphy exhibits the fluid, cursive style known as kana, which was developed to suit the phonetic structure of the Japanese language.

The characters flow across the paper with a rhythmic quality, demonstrating the mastery of brush control typical of the period. The ink varies in density, creating a sense of movement that mirrors the ephemeral nature of the cherry blossoms described in the verse. The paper itself is a significant element of the work, featuring subtle decorative treatments that were common in aristocratic circles of the time. These fragments are highly regarded for their preservation of courtly aesthetics and the refined literary culture of the Heian era.

As a piece of historical calligraphy, this fragment provides insight into the intersection of poetry and visual art. The arrangement of the characters is not merely functional, but serves as a deliberate aesthetic choice, balancing the negative space with the weight of the ink. The Kōshi-gire remains a primary reference for the study of Japanese manuscript culture, representing the high level of technical skill achieved by scribes and poets during this era. The work is presented here as a fine art print, capturing the texture of the original paper and the nuances of the ink strokes.

You might also like

Cherry Blossoms - Sakai Hōitsu — Sakai Hōitsu
Poems about Cherry Blossoms (Murasame Fragments) - Nijō Tameyo — Nijō Tameyo

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Poem-about-Cherry-Blossoms-from-Collection-of-Elegant-Flowers_Poster_CompositorV1_1791423263428.jpg?v=1791424624
https://www.solisprints.co.uk/de/products/poem-about-cherry-blossoms-from-collection-of-elegant-flowers-kodai-no-kimi
