The composition centres on a satyr, identifiable by his goat-like legs, carrying a nymph upon his back. A youth leads the pair forward, creating a sense of movement within the circular frame. The figures are set against a background of foliage, executed with quick, hatched strokes that suggest the wild, untamed nature of the forest setting.

Fragonard, a master of the French Rococo, produced this work during a period when he explored themes of pastoral fantasy and classical antiquity. The etching demonstrates his ability to translate the spontaneity of his drawings into the print medium. The figures possess a lightness of touch, typical of his approach to mythological subjects, which often prioritised grace and narrative charm over rigid academic structure. The circular framing device, or tondo, draws the eye inward, focusing attention on the interaction between the three figures. The surrounding vegetation is treated with a looser, more gestural style, providing a contrast to the more defined anatomy of the central group.

This print is part of a series of etchings that reflect the artist's interest in the decorative potential of classical motifs. The work captures the light-hearted, often playful spirit of the mid-eighteenth-century French aesthetic. By employing varied line weights, Fragonard creates a sense of volume and texture, particularly in the rendering of the satyr's fur and the nymph's drapery. The work remains a clear example of the artist's technical facility with the etching needle, showcasing his preference for expressive, rather than purely descriptive, mark-making. It offers a glimpse into the private, imaginative world of an artist who excelled at capturing fleeting moments of mythological narrative.

<div
